If you have a horse, then you are probably already well aware that there is a lot you need to do in order to care for it properly. This means taking care of it at all times of the year, and that is something that you will certainly want to make sure you are doing right if you can help it.
There are quite a few things you might want to think about when it comes to the winter in particular, so in this post we are going to take a look at what these might be. Looking after your horse in winter might turn out to be simpler than you think.
Changes To Diet
As with most animals, the diet of a horse will naturally vary when the winter comes, and you need to make sure that you are keeping up with that, providing them with the sustenance they need at this time of year.
Mostly, that will be forage, which should form the basis and background of their diet at this time. As long as you do that, it means that they will be getting the energy they need at the right time, and will be able to deal with the cold a lot more effectively too.
Warmth
Obviously, dealing with the cold is really important if you want to make sure your horse is enjoying the winter as much as possible. So you should ensure that you are doing all you can to keep your horse warm as well, and this is something that might be easier and simpler than you think.
Mostly it’s just a case of providing them with shelter and ensuring that they have some winter horse blankets – check these to ensure they are still good from last here, and if not then replace them.
Hydration
This is important at all times of year, but it is something that is often forgotten about a little in the colder months. However, it’s still essential that you are keeping your horse hydrated in the winter, so you should make sure that you are thinking about this, and that you do all you can to really ensure that your horse is getting all the water it needs.
If you can do this, you are going to find that it makes a world of difference to how well and effectively you care for the horse, so that is something you will certainly want to bear in mind.
Routine Changes
There will naturally be changes to the horse’s routine in winter as well, and you should make sure that you are thinking about this if you are going to keep your horse as happy and well as possible.
Routine changes are something that you should try to bear in mind and which are going to be vital for you to think about. That way, you can make sure that you are giving them what they need when they need it.
