No sooner has Christmas ended and it’s the time to splash the cash again on the one you love for Valentine’s Day. But the love of your life might not always be your partner or spouse, it could be the four legged friend that you care so deeply for! Now, if you’re like me, you may be wondering how Valentine’s Day even came about?
Well, St. Valentine’s Day began as a celebration of early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most common explanation for the origin of the holiday is that it is celebrated in honour of Saint Valentine, who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. Legend has it that he fell in love with his jailer’s daughter and on the day of his execution, he wrote her a farewell letter and signed it “from your Valentine”. By the 15th century this event had developed into an occasion where lovers expressed their feelings for each other by giving flowers, confectionery and cards.
Approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year and according to a number of surveys, around 9 million of these are bought by people for their pets. Now if you are really in love with your cat or dog, then you could always tie the knot with them on www.marryyourpet.com (yes it’s a real website, and yes people have done it). They even have a gallery of newlyweds! I suggest checking it out yourself, if for nothing else other than a giggle.
But if you’re not quite ready for such a commitment then why not treat your pet as well as your partner this Valentine’s Day.
