St Patrick’s weekend is a time for fun, parades, and celebrations, but it can also be overwhelming for our pets. Whether you’re planning to bring your dog along to enjoy the festivities or leaving them at home, a little preparation can help keep them safe, happy, and stress-free.
Here are some important tips to make sure your pet enjoys the weekend just as much as you do!
How to Keep Your Pet Safe & Happy This St Patrick’s Day
Bringing Your Dog to a Parade? Here’s What to Know
Parades are full of energy—crowds, music, and excitement—but not all dogs will enjoy the experience.
If your dog is comfortable in busy environments, here’s how to keep them safe and happy:
1. Know Your Dog’s Limits – Some dogs love social outings, while others get anxious in crowds. If your dog isn’t used to busy places, it might be better to leave them at home.
You could always arrange for us to call and check on them while you are out.
2. Use a Secure Lead & Harness – With all the excitement, even the best-trained dogs can get startled. A secure harness and lead will help prevent any unexpected escapes.
3. Bring Water & Treats – Just like us, dogs can get thirsty and tired during long events. Keep a water bottle and some treats on hand to keep them comfortable.
4. Watch for Overstimulation – Loud music, marching bands, and people in costumes can be overwhelming for dogs. Keep an eye on their body language—if they seem stressed, it may be time to head home.
5. Respect Your Dog’s Space – Parades attract animal lovers, and many people may want to pet your dog. If your pup isn’t comfortable with strangers, kindly let people know.
6. Be Mindful of Ground Conditions – If it’s a cold day, pavement can be chilly on your dog’s paws. Always check the ground temperature before taking long walks.
7. Watch Out for Dropped Food at the Parade – Parades often mean plenty of food vendors and snacks, which also means lots of food ending up on the ground. While this might not seem like a big deal, many common parade treats can be dangerous for dogs.
What to Wear At the Parade
If your dog LOVES to get dressed up then here are some suggestions for a splash of green to make them stand out in a crowd.
Keeping Pets Safe at Home During the Festivities
If your pet is staying at home while you head out, here’s how to make sure they stay relaxed and happy:
1. Create a Cozy Space – Set up a quiet area with their favourite blanket and toys where they can rest away from the noise.
2. Check Food & Drink Safety – If you’re hosting or attending a gathering, be mindful of food scraps. Many party snacks (like chocolate, alcohol, and fatty foods) can be harmful to pets.
3. Update ID Tags & Microchips – If visitors are coming and going, make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip details are up to date, just in case they manage to slip outside.
4. Give Them Some Extra Love – Before heading out, spend some time playing with your pet or taking them for a walk. A little extra attention can help them settle while you’re away.
