We met David through #irishbizparty. At the time we were looking for some photos to be done for the website and upcoming promotions, so we asked if anyone knew a photographer that was willing to become the ‘go to’ photographer for Pet Sitters Ireland.
David offered to take pictures of both Joey and Coco (Patch is getting a bit old for all that fuss now!) and he gladly agreed.
We went up to Dublin with the dogs and he was so patient with them. Coco kept falling asleep and Joey was so over excited it was definitely a challenge to get a picture of him without him moving at lightning speed or choosing that day to decide to pee like a boy up the camera stand!!
We wanted to find out a little bit more about David and his work, so took some time to ask him a few questions about his family and what he loves most about being a photographer. He also offered up some handy tips for taking your own pictures!
David has also agreed to become a judge for our 1st annual Nose of Tralee competition – so we are very excited about that!
So grab a cuppa and enjoy!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I live in Palmerstown, Dublin 20 with my wife and 3 children. Photography is a second career after spending over 20 years in IT roles in the insurance and telecoms industries. I started to evolve my photography business in 2009. I currently full?l assignments throughout Ireland, especially weddings, and I also have a small studio/o?ce in Lucan Co. Dublin.
What types of pets do you have?
We only have one pet currently, a rabbit named Luke who is with is for almost 5 years now.
What do you love most about being a photographer?
As regards to the act itself, it’s the freezing of time at an instant which may become a cherished memory to somebody. In general, it’s the variety of projects and the interaction with clients which whether for personal or business assignments are usually related to positive events and occasions.
What types of photography do you do?
In general, weddings and civil partnerships, ‘lifestyle’ covering family portraits (including their pets), occasions and celebrations. For business photography, it can include business pro?le headshots, products, premises, events, conferences, etc. Recently, I did some food and theatre show assignments.
What tips do you have for people considering getting photos done of their pets?
I suppose a few things would be:
a) Location – do you want a studio or home based shoot or an outdoor active shoot?
b) Appropriate preparation or grooming especially if doing a studio shoot. Might not be as relevant for outdoor shoots.
c) Allow plenty of time. Your pet won’t be familiar with studio surroundings so some settling may be required. If they are energetic, perhaps take them for a walk or exercise close to the time of your session. Bringing some favorite bedding or objects which may help them, which could also be used as props in the images.
d) Bring treats & rewards and remember to maintain normal discipline routine, especially if wanting to garner their attention at points during the shoot.
What one tip would you give us amateur photographers when trying to take that perfect picture on our smartphone?
All photography is based on lighting, but moving your position, if possible, is often the best way to improve an image whether for better light, improved background or just to play with different angles of view for more interesting results.
What is the biggest misconception people have about being a photographer?
There are quite a few but one of the biggest I think is that the ?nal image presented comes straight out of the camera and that digital cameras make it easy!
What would make my dog’s tail wag about your photography?
I would hope having a treasured moment to display, having an enjoyable experience, and getting value.
