Do you have a first aid kit for your pets? Something that you can use in case of injury?
If not, then you should put creating a complete pet first aid kit at the top of your “to do” list.
Whilst your vet should always be the first place you take your pet when they are injured, if you are travelling, or not near a vet, then a first aid kit is super handy to have.
Pet Sitters Ireland provide Pet Sitting and Dog Walking Services across all of the Republic of Ireland for all types of animals. Call us 1800 303010 or 087 9898042 or Contact Us for more information.
How To Create A Complete First Aid Kit For Your Pets
Important Information To Include
No pet first aid kit is complete without a list of important names and phone numbers, including:
- Your pet’s regular vet
- Your pet’s emergency vet (in case this is different to your regular vet)
- A list of medications your pet takes
- Medical records, including when your pet last had their vaccinations
- A photograph of your pet (in case you become separated from him)
Your best bet is to keep all of the important paperwork in a sealed plastic bag. That way, if the pet first aid kit happens to get wet or to sustain damage, the papers should remain dry and safe.
Your Pet First Aid Kit Should Also Include:
Pet First Aid Supplies
Include the following supplies in your pet first aid kit:
- A sturdy lead
- An extra collar
- Pet bandages. Many pet stores sell non-stick bandages that will securely attach to your pet but not stick to the fur.
- A muzzle to keep your dog restrained in case he becomes over stressed.
General First Aid Supplies
Much of what you will put in your pet first aid kit you may already have in your own home, such as:
- Thermometer
- Gauze
- Cotton balls
- Petroleum jelly
- Ice pack
- Scissors
- Adhesive tape
- Saline solution
- Tweezers
- Cleansing Wipes
And Don’t Forget…
Be sure to pack your pet first aid kit with a soft blanket, in case you need to wrap your pet in it.
Of course, you can also purchase a pre-packaged pet first aid kit from many pet supplies companies. However, even if you go with that option, be sure it has your pet’s important paperwork, vets’ phone numbers, and so on that is specific to your pet.
