The Best Vets In Ireland: The Ultimate Pet Lovers Guide To Choosing A Vet

Best Vets

Choosing a vet takes careful consideration and isn’t something that you want to rush. Ideally once you know you are going to get a pet, or move to a new area, then you should start looking for a vet that suits you and your family.

There are lots of things to consider when you are making a decision about which is the best vet for you. We’ve put together a handy list of things to check before you make the decision to ensure that you are on the right track to getting the perfect match for your pets.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Vet

#1. Ask For Recommendations

It’s always a good idea to ask your pet loving friends which vet they are using and who they recommend. Often your Pet Sitter, Dog Walker, Groomer or Dog Trainer will be able to recommend someone that they use or have worked with previously.

You may also find recommendations on their Facebook Page or Website which you can take a look at and see what other people have to say about them.

#2. Are They Friendly and Helpful?

Customer service is so important when you are dealing with service providers. Are they helpful when you call? Do they answer the phone in an upbeat manner? Do they answer your questions without sounding annoyed or inconvenienced?

It’s really important that you feel that you are being taken care of and that they have the best interests of your pet at heart.

#3. Where Are They Located?

Something local to home is always preferable if you need a vet in an emergency. Especially if you are in the city where traffic can be bad you don’t want any delays in getting there.

Parking can also be an issue and if you pet was sick you don’t want to struggle to park so you can see the vet.

#4. Are They Busy?

Waiting can be frustrating, however it’s often a sign of a popular and well loved service provider. If you vet is very busy then it shows they have lots of happy customers. An empty vets is probably not a good sign, unless of course they are located in a very rural area and serve a small community.

#5. What Are There Opening Hours?

Checking their availability is important. Are they available for late night/early morning call outs. What cover do they offer on the weekend if your pet is sick?

You want to know that if you need them then someone will be there to assist you.

#6. What Facilities Do They Have?

Vets can vary in the level of care they can offer at their premises. It doesn’t mean a vet is bad if they can’t perform all treatments, however it’s important to know if they have an affiliation with another vet that would be able to help.

For example, if your pet needed surgery are they able to do it or have someone that would do it on their behalf, or will you be expected to find another vet that can help.

#7. What Is The Cost of The Vet?

Understanding what your vet charges is important. What is the structure of their fees and what payments options (if any) are available.

Lots of vets will be able to advise you on Pet Insurance options and some are now starting to offer their own payments plans for things like annual check ups and injections.
