10 Facts About Bichon Frise And Why We Love Them

As part of our series on Dog Breeds we decided to take a look at the Bichon Frise and find out some facts about them and why they would make a great pet for any family.

#1. The Bichon Frise is a small dog, roughly 5-10kg. It’s normally all white with a black nose and dark round eyes.

#2. It’s known for being playful, feisty, affectionate and happy.

#3. They love company, are very social and love to go everywhere with their owners.

#4. They generally have a life span of 12-15 years, although many can live 15+ years.

#5. For the owner who has allergies they make the perfect companion. They have a thick double layer coat which doesn’t shed, which means there is no unwanted dog hair around the house.

#6. Because they don’t shed they need regular grooming to keep their coat in good condition.

#7. Bichon Frise is French for curly lapdog. ‘Frise’ is French for curly and ‘Bichon’ is a type of lapdog.

#8. In the 14th century Spanish sailors loved the breed so much, as they were great companions. The fact that they used them as bartering meant that the breed spread around the world.

#9. They were often used as performance dogs in the 19th Century due to their fun personality and friendly nature.

#10. Most Bichon Frise are not keen on the water, so you won’t see many of them running in the sea.
